What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme, commonly known as the NDIS, is a revolutionary program in Australia aimed at providing people with disabilities the support they need to live full, independent lives. Launched in 2013, it has transformed the way disability services are funded and delivered in Australia, giving participants more control and choice over their supports.
Understanding the NDIS: A New Approach to Disability Support
The NDIS is a government-funded scheme designed to support Australians with permanent and significant disabilities. Unlike traditional welfare models, which provide fixed services, the NDIS offers a personalized approach, tailoring support to meet each individual’s unique needs, goals, and aspirations. The NDIS focuses on three key approaches:
- Choice and Control: Participants have the freedom to choose their support services, providers, and how their funds are used, promoting independence and empowerment.
- Goal-Driven Support: The focus is on helping participants achieve personal goals, whether related to work, social engagement, health, or daily living.
- Community Participation: The scheme encourages participants to engage in the community, access opportunities, and build skills to lead fulfilling lives.
Who is Eligible for the NDIS?
The NDIS is available to Australians with permanent and significant disabilities that affect their ability to participate in everyday activities. To qualify, applicants must:
- Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.
- Have a permanent disability that substantially reduces their ability to carry out tasks or activities without support.
- Be between the age of 9 and 65 when applying for the scheme. If you are over the age of 65 you may be eligible for the Commonwealth Continuity of Support program here. If you are looking for support for your child under the age of 9, you can now look for support under the early childhood approach program here.
Eligible participants undergo an assessment process to determine their specific needs and goals, which helps create a customized NDIS plan.
What Does the NDIS Cover?
The NDIS funds a wide range of supports and services that are considered “reasonable and necessary” for each participant’s unique situation. Some examples of what supports include:
- Daily Personal Care: Assistance with bathing, dressing, and grooming.
- Mobility and Transport: Support for travel, including funding for specialized transport or vehicle modifications.
- Therapies and Health Supports: Access to physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and other health services.
- Assistive Technology and Equipment: Funding for mobility aids, communication devices, and home modifications.
- Skill Development and Employment Support: Training programs, job coaching, and support for achieving employment goals.
The program does not cover general expenses, like rent or groceries, but focuses on disability-related supports that improve quality of life and independence.
If covered under your NDIS plan, the NDIS can help you with community access to prevent social isolation. This can be discussed with your NDIS planner as a need when developing your plan, here at Evergreen Support Services we work to make sure your plan is aligned to your needs and can help advocate for you in your planning meeting – contact us today if you need help.
How Does the NDIS Work?
The NDIS process begins with an individual assessment and plan creation, you will work with an NDIS planner to identify your needs, goals, and required supports. Once the plan is approved, you can use your funding to engage service providers and access the supports outlined in your plan. You will have the flexibility to:
- Choose from a wide range of NDIS-registered providers or use self-managed funds to work with non-registered providers.
- Adjust your support as your needs change over time, with periodic plan reviews available.
Why is the NDIS Important?
The NDIS is more than a funding program—it’s a commitment to inclusivity, accessibility, and independence for people with disabilities. By offering personalized support, the NDIS empowers participants to:
- Pursue personal goals and aspirations, whether in education, employment, or social activities.
- Develop and enhance skills to gain independence in daily life.
- Build connections within the community, promoting a more inclusive society.
With the NDIS, Australians with disabilities have more opportunities to lead fulfilling lives, engage with their communities, and access resources that make a meaningful difference.
